The Green Island Union Free School District — better known as Heatly School — is a Visible Learning Certified public school in Green Island, NY which serves approximately 220 students in grades Pre-K-8.
Visible Learning+ is a professional learning program that helps students take responsibility for their own learning and gives teachers immediate, specific feedback to help transform education in the classroom.
“We are honored to be the first New York public school district to receive this distinction. This award shows the exemplary progress our teachers and students have made by putting research into practice with validity,” said Superintendent Dan Kalbfliesh.
With Visible Learning, Green Island UFSD teachers are actively involved in making adaptations to their instruction based on real-time feedback of what is working for their students. They build trust with their students in order to support risk-taking in learning, challenging their students regularly.
When students can set learning goals, express what they are learning, describe their next steps, know what to do when they reach a roadblock, see mistakes as opportunities, and use feedback, they are visible learners.
In order to achieve this distinction, Green Island UFSD completed a rigorous assessment process, delivered a portfolio with evidence in action showing Visible Learning throughout their school, and proved their adherence to specific and measurable performance standards. The award is valid for two years, and schools must reapply in order to maintain their certification.
