Green Island voters approve tuitioning plan for grades 9-12 students

Green Island residents have voted to approve a measure that will send all grades 9-12 students to Watervliet High School, beginning this September.

The referendum passed by a vote of 135 to 28 on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Under the agreement, Green Island Union Free School District will pay tuition to the Watervliet City School District for the education of approximately 55 high school students at an estimated cost of $400,000 per year over the next five years.

“I would like to thank our community and everyone who participated in today’s vote and the process leading up to it,” said Green Island Superintendent Dan Kalbfliesh. “We understand this may not have been the easiest decision — but in approving this plan, our community has confirmed their commitment to providing the best possible opportunities for our high school students and also, their strong support of preserving the Heatly identity.”

What happens next?

Families of Green Island students in the affected grade levels can expect transition activities to begin over the next several weeks, including more information about Watervliet High School’s academic offerings, scheduling and transportation. Grade-level shadow days at Watervliet High School are being planned for early spring.
