Reminder: Vote — Tuesday, Feb. 4 — on the proposed Tuitioning Plan for Grades 9-12

Your voice matters! A reminder that on Tuesday, February 4, the community will vote on a proposed tuitioning agreement that will shape the academic future for grades 9-12 students.

Under the proposed agreement, Green Island students in grades 9-12 would attend Watervliet High School, beginning in September 2025. The vote will take place from 2-8 p.m. in the cafeteria at the Heatly School.

Overview of the Proposed Tuitioning Plan

  • The tuitioning proposal would provide access to educational opportunities that are not currently available to high school students in Green Island. This includes a wider choice of electives, college-level and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and more extracurricular opportunities and diverse learning experiences that will better prepare students for their future, whether they choose to pursue a college degree or move straight to the workforce.
  • The proposed tuition agreement, approved by the Board of Education in December, would result in cost-savings for the Green Island community. While the Green Island school district would pay tuition for our grades 9-12 students to attend Watervliet High School, cost-savings and efficiencies are anticipated due to a reduction in staffing at the secondary level. Over the long term, this will alleviate the costs of salaries and benefits that increase each year, often at a higher rate than the tax increase.
  • Watervliet’s non-resident tuition rate combined with its aid ratios for special services would benefit Green Island UFSD by keeping costs more predictable or stable over time. This would, in turn, help the district maintain our unique identity in a way that is more sustainable for the community.
