The week of October 23, 2023, Living Environment students participated and completed a Cellular Respiration lab to see how cells make energy.
Students mixed various amounts of sugar with yeast to observe cellular respiration. Carbon Dioxide is released as a byproduct of cellular respiration which caused the balloons in the lab experiment to inflate. Students measured the circumference of the inflated balloons to find that the balloon with with the greatest circumference had the most amount of sugar. After hypothesizing different scenarios, students learned that this result is because there is a higher rate of cellular respiration occurring when more sugar is present.
